Installation Guide

Installing apps from outside the Play Store takes a few extra steps.

You'll see some warnings during install — this is normal.

  • Chrome Play Protect warning: Tap "Download anyway" — this appears for all apps outside the Play Store, not just ours.
  • Chrome blocks opening the APK: Open the Files app instead and tap the file from your Downloads folder.
  • Accessibility Service grayed out (Android 13+): Go to Settings → Apps → BlockOut → ⋮ → "Allow restricted settings", then return to BlockOut. See Step 5 below.
1

Download the APK

Tap the download button above. Your browser may warn you about downloading an APK — this is normal for apps outside the Play Store. Tap "Download anyway" or "OK" to continue.

2

Allow installation

When you open the APK, Android will ask you to allow installation from this source. On Android 8+, go to Settings > Apps > Special access > Install unknown apps and enable it for your browser. On older versions, enable Settings > Security > Unknown sources.

3

Install BlockOut

Open the downloaded APK file (check your notifications or the Downloads folder). Tap Install. The installation takes a few seconds.

If Chrome says it blocked the file, open the Files app, go to Downloads, and tap it from there.

4

Allow restricted settings (Android 13+)

After install, BlockOut's Accessibility Service will appear grayed out — this is an Android security feature for sideloaded apps. To unlock it:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → BlockOut
  2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner
  3. Tap "Allow restricted settings"
  4. Return to BlockOut and enable the Accessibility Service

This is a one-time step. If you're on Android 12 or earlier, skip this — the toggle won't be grayed out.

5

Grant permissions

BlockOut will guide you through granting the permissions it needs:

  • Accessibility Service — detects when you open blocked apps or visit blocked websites (this is the core blocking mechanism)
  • Device Administrator — prevents uninstalling BlockOut during active blocking
  • Display over other apps — shows the blocking overlay

These permissions are only used for blocking. BlockOut does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.

6

Add your blocklist

Add the apps and websites you want to block, set your weekly settings window, and you're good to go. Your commitment starts now.

Verify Your Download

For the security-conscious: verify the APK hasn't been tampered with.

On a computer, run this command in the same directory as the downloaded APK:

sha256sum blockout-1.3.apk

On macOS:

shasum -a 256 blockout-1.3.apk

The output should match the SHA-256 hash shown in the download box above.
